Cello

Lily Moerschel is a freelance cellist based in Pittsburgh. She is principal cellist of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, acting associate principal cellist of West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and is a section cellist at Canton Symphony Orchestra. Lily also performs regularly with the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, Butler County Symphony Orchestra, and Erie Philharmonic. She teaches cello at the Western Pennsylvania Center for the Arts in Verona and Johnstonbaugh Music Center. Lily attended Bard College for her undergraduate studies, earning two Bachelor’s Degrees — one in Psychology and one in Cello Performance, having studied with Peter Wiley. Lily completed her Master in Cello Performance at Carnegie Mellon University, having studied with David Premo and Angela Park. Currently, Lily privately studies cello with Anne Williams and Alexander technique with Lisa Levinson. When teaching, Lily balances technique building along with creative expression. She is also passionate about helping students develop effective and sustainable practice and performance habits. 

In addition to teaching and orchestral performance, Lily is a passionate participant in the chamber music scene. She champions the performance of works by obscure or living composers. She has experience playing music outside of the classical canon and is always eager to expand her repertoire and explore extended techniques.
